Located on the banks of the Ganges, Ahar is a tiny village in the Bulandshahar noted for its ancient temples of Goddess Avantika and Lord Shiva. Located on the banks of the Ganga, Ahar has been inhabited since the time of the Mahabharata. According to the epic, Duryodhana plotted to poison Bhima and murder him. To go to Ahar, he tossed Bhim into the Ganga River. After Bhim was healed by the Nagvanshi lords of Ahar, he went back to Hastinapur. There were a few Nagvanshi period coins discovered here.

Historic documents place the founding of Anupshahr by Bargujar Raja Anup Rai somewhere between 1605 and 1628. The establishment date is during the time that Jahangir was Mughal emperor. Legend has it that when the emperor was attacked by a lion while on a hunting trip, Anup Rai came to his rescue. Anup Rai, who had received the land from Jahangir as a gift, built the village and fort there. With the help of King Tarasingh, the eighth-generation Raja Anup Rai, the city of Anupshahr developed and eventually became a major centre for Ayurvedic treatment.
