Belha Pratapgarh, also known as Pratapgarh, serves as the district's administrative centre. During his reign from 1628 to 1682, local king Raja Pratap Bhadur Singh made Rampur, a fortified city and established a fortress he named Pratapgarh. The settlement that grew up around the fort was eventually given the name Pratapgarh. The district's administrative centre was located at Belha, later renamed Belha Pratapgarh, after the nearby Belha Bhawani Temple, which was founded in 1858. The name Belha is thought to have been inspired by the temple's location on the Sai River's bank. Often referred to as "Belha Mai," which translates to "Mother Goddess Belha," the name has gained widespread recognition.
