For those who have studied the intricacies of world history, the mere mention of the Khmer Empire will light up their faces. For the slightly less informed i.e. the historically challenged lot such as myself, that’s Cambodia we’re talking about!

With Thailand, Laos and Vietnam playing their role as the tourist-y neighbours, Cambodia isn’t far behind.

Read on for the top 10 things to do in Cambodia.

1. Explore, Absorb And Marvel At Angkor Wat, Siem Reap
angkor-wat

It literally translates to ‘heaven on earth’ and the beauty of these Khmer ruins is truly unmatched. The temple is regarded as the mother of all temples as it lies in the heart of Cambodia, the epicenter of the Khmer Civilization. The history and culture embodied by this one temple, which is a city in itself is massive; with the temple being the mortal representation of Mt. Meru, which is the Mt Olympus of Hindu Gods. Visit and spend hours to truly absorb the beauty and incredulity of it all. Try and go during sunrise for an unforgettably divine view.

2. Spend A Sunday With The Locals At The Royal Palace, Phnom Penh

The official residence of King Sihamoni, the palace is testimonial to the Khmer civilization. With its typical Khmer roofs and elaborate ornamentation, this historical structure by the riverfront must definitely be on your list. When visiting the Palace, it’s essential to be appropriately dressed - you need to keep your arms and knees covered, so avoid sleeveless tops and shorts.

3. Eat At Romdeng

The quality of restaurants in Cambodia is definitely top notch. Though there is an array of places to choose from, go for the traditional Cambodian delights at Romdeng in Phnom Penh. The list of must-try dishes includes, Fish Amok and the Tiger Prawn Curry. Tree ants and deep fried Tarantulas are on the menu as well, if you’re really up for a challenge that is ;)
beach

It’s a long 4 kilometers sandy strip, but try heading to the southern side to get away from the pandemonium of the crowd, chaos and street vendors. The southern side is a reclusive, cleaner hangout spot known as the Serendipity Beach. Watch the sundown, and soak in the happy atmosphere at the beach restaurant bars.

5. An Hour Of Learning At The National Museum Of Cambodia

As you enter the courtyard garden, just north of the Royal palace, the terracotta structure of the museum itself is the beginning of your journey to learn more about  Khmer sculptures. Statues of ancient Hindu deities and magnificent Khmer design; several centuries’ worth of work, craftsmanship and tradition.

6. Take The Holy Route At Prasat Preah Vihear

Much like the other temples here, it was designed to represent Mt Meru and dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is an important place of pilgrimage and the one thing that you learn in Cambodia is that despite the multiple cultural and museum visits, there’s always something new to learn here! This temple was also a source of major tension between Thailand and Cambodia in the 1900s but with time, it is now once again a religious site for Buddhists and Hindus.

7. Some Down Time At Battanbang

Cambodia is definitely a fusion of the urban life and heritage. Though it is Cambodia’s second largest city and relatively urbanised, the atmosphere is quite laid back. The beautifully preserved French architecture, the Sangker River alongside and a bit of nothingness - ideal ingredients in the middle of a bustling trip.

8. Markets And More At Phnom Penh

The vibrant nightlife and beautiful temples increase the city’s appeal, but it’s the little markets (selling traditional scarves called Kramas, ceramics and bottles containing  infused  rice wine) where you must certainly go!

9. Homestay At Sambor Prei Kuk

Buzzing with locals and their beautiful traditions, a homestay is a great option while you are in Cambodia. Spending a night with a local family in one of the villages near the Sambor Prei Kuk templs is definitely the best way to get the taste of the true Cambodian life.

10. Plantation Tours At Kampot

The lush rice paddies and striking scenery and Phnorm Chork caves would come calling to you. Once you’re done soaking in this picturesque town, take plantation tours that show you the many pepper plantations and fruit farms here in Kampot, known primarily for its pepper and Durian!
