There is a complex history behind Shahi Qila (Royal Fort), also known as Karar Fort and Jaunpur Fort. The Rathore rulers of Kannauj donated much of the building materials that went into it. Islamic raiders smashed these religious buildings. Lodhis, who took over from the Tughlaqs a century later, demolished the fort. However, under the rule of Mughal kings Humayun and Akbar, it underwent substantial renovations and repairs.
