June 1, 1983

In Argentina, the peso is the country's official currency. The Argentine peso symbol is the dollar sign ($), just as it is in many other countries that use either the peso or the dollar as their primary currency. It has been given the code ARS in ISO 4217. The Argentine peso (ARP) was Argentina's official currency back when the country was still a republic. After a period of significant hyperinflation and currency devaluation, it was phased down in 1985 after having been founded in June 1983. However, the austral (ASA) wasn't put into circulation until the year 1992 after it was first introduced. It was later replaced by the Argentine nuevo peso, which is the currency that is in use today in the country (ARS). Argentina has since moved on from the Argentine peso, which was formerly the only unit of money in use throughout the country.

The following Argentine peso banknotes—AR$10, AR$20, AR$50, AR$100, AR$200, AR$500, and AR$1000—may be used as payment in any establishment in the country beginning this coming July 2020.

The smallest coin is worth 5 centavos, and the largest is worth 10 pesos. However, coins with values of five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents have almost completely disappeared from circulation.

The current Argentine peso price is INR (⚠️ ) .

History of the Argentine Peso

The ARP was introduced in 1983 as a replacement for the peso ley, and the exchange rate at the time was 1 ARP for every 10,000 peso ley. One ARP dollar was equivalent to one hundred units called centavos when it was first introduced. There were coins for one peso, five pesos, ten pesos, and fifty pesos available.

When the peso was first launched as a currency in 1983, banknotes were printed in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, and 100 pesos. These were the inaugural banknotes issued for the ARP. On the other hand, the banknotes for 500 and 5,000 pesos were not introduced until 1984. In the year 1985, a bank note for an additional 10,000 pesos was printed.

The Argentine austral was introduced in 1985 as a replacement for the Argentine peso (ARA). The Argentine Nuevo peso, which is Argentina's current national currency, succeeded the austral as the country's primary unit of currency in 1992.

The eight-real silver coin was commonly referred to as the peso when it was used as currency in Spain. As soon as Argentina achieved its independence, it started minting its own currencies in reales, soles, and escudos. One of these currencies was the silver eight-real (or sol) pieces, which are now often referred to as pesos.

Up until the year 1881, this currency, along with those of the countries that were nearby, was in circulation. Intense Beginning in the year 1826, two distinct series of peso-denominated paper money were distributed throughout circulation. In 1881, the national currency, the peso, totally supplanted it at a rate of one peso to one nacional peso.

The Argentine Confederation minted coins for 1, 2, and 4 centavos in the year 1854. At the time, 100 centavos were equivalent to 1 peso, which was then equal to 8 reales. However, Argentina did not completely adopt a decimal monetary system until the year 1881.

During the time that the austral was the country's official currency, Argentina experienced hyperinflation. In 1989, during the last several months of President Raul Alfonsn's term in office, prices steadily increased (by 200 percent in July alone), which resulted in a declining exchange rate. Emergency banknotes in the amounts of 10,000, 50,000, and 500,000 australes were printed by the various provincial governments for the first time in several decades. This marked the beginning of the provinces' return to issuing their own currency. The value of the currency returned to its previous state once Carlos Menem was elected president. It wasn't until 1992 that ARS was introduced.

Countries Accepting the Argentine Peso

Argentine Peso is the legal tender of Argentina and is only used within the boundary of the country for all kinds of transactions.
