In Argentina, the peso is the country's official currency. The Argentine peso symbol is the dollar sign ($), just as it is in many other countries that use either the peso or the dollar as their primary currency. It has been given the code ARS in ISO 4217. The Argentine peso (ARP) was Argentina's official currency back when the country was still a republic. After a period of significant hyperinflation and currency devaluation, it was phased down in 1985 after having been founded in June 1983. However, the austral (ASA) wasn't put into circulation until the year 1992 after it was first introduced. It was later replaced by the Argentine nuevo peso, which is the currency that is in use today in the country (ARS). Argentina has since moved on from the Argentine peso, which was formerly the only unit of money in use throughout the country.

History of the Argentine Peso

The ARP was introduced in 1983 as a replacement for the peso ley, and the exchange rate at the time was 1 ARP for every 10,000 peso ley. One ARP dollar was equivalent to one hundred units called centavos when it was first introduced. There were coins for one peso, five pesos, ten pesos, and fifty pesos available.

When the peso was first launched as a currency in 1983, banknotes were printed in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, and 100 pesos. These were the inaugural banknotes issued for the ARP. On the other hand, the banknotes for 500 and 5,000 pesos were not introduced until 1984. In the year 1985, a bank note for an additional 10,000 pesos was printed.

The Argentine austral was introduced in 1985 as a replacement for the Argentine peso (ARA). The Argentine Nuevo peso, which is Argentina's current national currency, succeeded the austral as the country's primary unit of currency in 1992.

The eight-real silver coin was commonly referred to as the peso when it was used as currency in Spain. As soon as Argentina achieved its independence, it started minting its own currencies in reales, soles, and escudos.
