History of the Ukrainian Hryvnia
Agriculture and heavy industries helped propel Ukraine to the position of having one of the largest economies in the former Soviet Union.
In 1917, when the Ukrainian National Republic declared its independence from the Russian Empire, the new currency of the country, which was a renamed version of the Kievan Rus' hryvnia, was given the name hryvnia. The karbovanets were exchanged for the hryvnia at a rate of 1 hryvnia to 100,000 karbovantsiv between September 2 and September 16, 1996.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, hyperinflation swept over the karbovanets. The introduction of the hryvnia occurred in relative obscurity for the most part. According to a Presidential Decree dated August 26, 1996, the Hryvnia was formally introduced into circulation on August 29, 1996.
After September 16, 1996, any karbovanets that are still in circulation can potentially be exchanged for hryvnia at financial institutions.
Starting in January 2023, the National Bank of Ukraine will begin the process of discontinuing the circulation of paper banknotes for the denominations 5, 10, 20, and 100 hryvnia. These banknotes were developed between the years 2003 and 2007. Newly designed coins and banknotes of a more recent generation will take their place when they are phased out.
Countries Accepting the Ukrainian Hryvnia

Best Ways to Identify Counterfeit Ukrainian Hryvnia Notes
There are a few ways through which you can spot the counterfeit Ukrainian Hryvnia notes:
Each denomination of banknote has its own distinct colour of paper that is used in the printing process so that it can be easily distinguished from other denominations of banknotes. One colour predominated throughout this picture. The note for one hundred hryvnia is olive green, the note for two hundred hryvnia is pale pink, and the note for five hundred hryvnia is beige.
When a banknote is held up to the light, the image that is revealed is one that is created by the internal structure of the paper. T. Shevchenko, Lesia Ukraineka, and Grigory Skovoroda appear on the 100, 200, and 500 hryvnia bills, respectively.
Some of the images on the front of the bill are created with a special stamp that is only available for that purpose. The paint has been lifted off the paper, which makes the uneven surface of the notes more apparent.
When a banknote is held at an acute angle to the light source, an image of the denomination's digital value shows on the note.
The banknote contains a number of different visual components, all of which are printed with ink that, depending on the angle at which the observer is looking at it, changes colour. If you rotate your head so that it is perpendicular to the orientation of the photo, you will notice that the image has a lilac (or crimson-purple) cast to it. The colour shifts to an olive tone when viewed from a perspective that is so far off from the original scene.
This one-of-a-kind printing technique makes it possible to create multi-coloured images in which the change from one hue to the next is smooth and unbroken.
The bill for one hundred hryvnia displays the letter "U," the bills for two hundred and five hundred and one thousand hryvnia display the value of the nominal "200" and "500," respectively, and the bill for one thousand hryvnia displays a distinct picture that is only obscured when it is viewed in the dark.
