History of the Belarusian Ruble

The country known as Belarus in the present time was once a part of the Soviet Union before the Russian Revolution. During the Russian Revolution, like many other countries within the Soviet Union, the country of Belarus tried to establish itself as an independent nation. After experiencing some initial hurdles and, more importantly, after the Soviet Union's collapse, it was able to establish itself as a sovereign nation. After its inception, however, it found itself in urgent need of banknotes but without the legal power to issue Soviet Union currency. Finally, in 1992, the country of Belarus introduced its own currency, the Belarusian Ruble. The banknotes introduced in 1992 had very few security features. During the early years, Belarus's economy was unstable and the inflation rate was very high. The Belarusian ruble country was forced to introduce notes of high denomination (20,000, 50,000, 100,000) during this period. The banknotes introduced in 1992 were in circulation till 2000. In 2000, the Belarusian government introduced new banknotes which were in circulation till 2016. In 2016, the government again introduced new notes at the rate of 1 BYN = 10,000 BYR.
