History of the Croatian Kuna

The word "kuna" stands for "marten”. Taxes were paid in the then-highly prized marten skins in the Roman provinces of upper and lower Pannonia (modern-day Hungary and Slavonia). Deriving from the Medieval Latin word for "marten," martus, which comes from Proto-Germanic *maruz, the Croatian word marturina ("tax") was thus created. Up until the early 15th century, various Slavic nations, most notably Kievan Rus and its successors, used the Croatian Kuna as their primary unit of money. 1/25 (and later 1/50) gryvnas of silver were equivalent to it. In Croatian, kune is the plural of the Croatian Kuna.

The concept of Kuna vanished during the Middle Ages. When Banovina of Croatia, an autonomous region founded inside the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, attempted to issue its own currency in addition to the Yugoslav dinar in 1939, the concept of a kuna currency was revived. The Independent State of Croatian Kuna was created by the Ustae government in 1941 when they founded the country. This money was in use until 1945, when the foundation of FPR Yugoslavia led to its replacement by the Yugoslav dinar, along with competing issuance by the communist Partisans. It was again replaced by the current Croatian Kuna currency in 1994.

Croatian Kuna to dollar currently stands at 0.14 USD. Croatian Kuna to NZD is currently 0.22 NZD.

On the other hand, Croatian Kuna to Sterling currently is 0.12 Pound Sterling, Great Britain’s currency. Croatian kuna to CAD is now at 0.19 CAD.
