In Circulation Since

1987

The Ugandan Shilling is the official currency and legal tender of the West African nation of Uganda. Formerly, the Ugandan Shilling had a subunit called the cent. High inflation and drops in the Ugandan Shilling rate caused Shilling to be the smallest in use unit. All banknotes and coins bearing the Ugandan shilling symbol are managed and circulated by the Bank of Uganda. Ever since 2013, Ugandan Shilling notes have been printed in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, and 50,000.

Although the Ugandan Shilling is widely accepted in Uganda, unofficial currencies like the USD and Euro are also used in the country. The current Ugandan Shilling to dollar rate is 0.00027, while the Ugandan Shilling to Euro rate is 0.00026.

Currently, you can sell Ugandan Shilling at the Ugandan Shilling to Rupee rate of around 0 .

History of the Ugandan Shilling

Like most African currencies the Ugandan shilling symbol traces back its origin to the 20th century. The Ugandan Shilling began circulation in 1966 replacing the former East African Shilling, following Uganda’s independence from Great Britain in 1962.

The Ugandan Shilling rate was initially pegged to the British pound, but the exchange rate was later adjusted to reflect market forces. The current Ugandan Shilling to INR rate is around 0.023, while the Ugandan Shilling exchange rate for Ugandan Shilling to PKR is around 0.062. The steady drop in the Ugandan Shilling price over the years can be attributed to its high inflation and various embezzlement charges faced by the country.

In 1987, the Bank of Uganda introduced new Ugandan Shilling notes and coins to replace the old currency, which had become worn and difficult to use. In 2013, the central bank had to re-introduce new Ugandan Shilling notes and coins removing the sub-unit cents after severe inflation and devaluation featuring enhanced security features to help deter counterfeiting.

Countries Accepting the Ugandan Shilling

The Ugandan Shilling is used as legal tender and official currency only in the West African country of Uganda. While the currency has been relatively stable in recent years, no other country uses it as a legal tender.

Amount in the Ugandan Shilling You Should Carry for Your Trip

Stocking up on Ugandan Shilling banknotes on your trip to Uganda is a good idea, as Uganda, for the most part, is a cash-based economy and credit cards are not widely accepted. However, the amount of Ugandan Shilling you should carry will vastly depend on your individual needs, travel, and food preferences as well as activities.

A moderately expensive trip to Uganda with food, accommodation and transport factored in, comes up to around 180,000 UGX a day, while a high-ticket luxury trip with similar culinary and transport experiences can cost upwards of 400,000 UGX a day. A well-planned and budgeted trip with certain compromises, however, can cost as low as 100,000 UGX.

As Ugandan Shilling Forex cards can only be used in major cities, it is recommended that you buy Ugandan Shilling from a Ugandan Shilling currency exchange as soon as you arrive in the country. Checking the live Ugandan Shilling rate beforehand is also a great idea.

Best Ways to Identify Counterfeit Ugandan Shilling Notes

There are a few ways through which you can spot the counterfeit Ugandan Shilling notes:

  • green check

When exposed to sunlight or any other form of direct light, Ugandan Shilling banknotes show a picture of Uganda’s National bird, a crane. The watermark features a light area near the eye and a dark area above the beak, along with the denomination of the note below the beak.

  • green check

A silvery security thread runs through the middle of the Ugandan Shilling banknotes. The thread appears broken when not exposed to direct light. When exposed to direct light the thread appears as a continuous line and changes colour from red to green.

  • green check

The lower denomination notes of 1000, 2000, and 5000 have their purple pattern change to green when the note is tilted.

  • green check

The higher denomination notes of 10,000, 20,0000, and 50,000 have a prominent green pattern that changes colour to blue when the note is tilted away from the holder. The pattern also contains a bright line that moves when the note is tilted side to side.
