Libya's national currency is the dinar (Libyan Dinar symbol: LD in Latin, ل.د in Arabic; code: LYD). One thousand dirhams equal one Libyan Dinar. It is issued by the Libyan Central Bank, which also controls credit and oversees the banking industry.

The name of British Guinea is the source of the common names for the Libyan dinar, jni or jneh. Outside of formal circles, the term dinar is hardly ever used. In normal speech, the approved fractional unit, the dirham, is never brought up. Instead, the word “garsh”, a variation of “qirsh”, is used, with 1 garsh equaling 10 dirhams. A kilo is a fashionable term for one thousand dinars. Similar to how five and ten dinar notes are sometimes referred to as fiver and tenner for five and ten-pound notes, respectively, in the younger generation, the nicknames for five and ten dinar notes are faifa and tsena. These playful feminizations of the English words “five” and “ten” are also possible traces of British slang words.

History of the Libyan Dinar

The old Italian Lira was replaced in 1951 by the Libyan Pound before the Libyan Dinar was introduced. They replicated the traditional style found on numerous Arabic banknotes from the time. On the front, they are printed in Arabic, and on the back, in English. King Idris is depicted on the front of the 1952 1 pound coin, which is coloured blue and white. Until the new Libyan Dinar was launched in 1971, the Libyan pound was still in use. They were available in 1/4, 1/2, 1, 5, and 10 dinar denominations.

After the new banknotes had been in circulation for a few years, fresh versions with Muammar Gaddafi started appearing on the Libyan Dinar notes. Along with pictures of mosques and national structures like buildings and monuments, the banknotes also had pictures of the leader. This batch of the Libyan Dinar had a lot of colours and features Omar El Mukhtar, who is well-known in Libyan history for his opposition to Italian occupation, is also depicted on them. When Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011, his likeness was also taken from the coinage. The 2013 1 Libyan Dinar has images that stand for emancipation and freedom. On the front are protesters holding the Libyan flag, and on the back are white doves with a picture of the flag of Libya.
