The peso is the Chile’s official unit of currency. The former version of the peso was in circulation from 1817 to 1960, and the current version has been in use continuously since 1975. It is the responsibility of the Banco Central de Chile to issue the peso. On the markets for the exchange of currencies around the world, it is represented by the sign CLP. History of the Chilean Peso

The Chilean peso country is Chile which is also referred to by a number of colloquial names (CLP). Two instances of this include the Quina design for the 500 peso note, which was introduced in 1977, and the Gamba design for the 100 peso note.

When it was first introduced in 1817, the value of one Chilean peso was equal to eight Spanish colonial reales. Up to 1851, one escudo was equivalent to two pesos, and one peso was subdivided into eight reales. Reales were the currency used in Spain. Although the era of real and escudo currency came to an end in 1851, the first creation of centavos and décimos did not begin until 1835. This was due to the fact that real and escudo coins were made of copper (10 centavo coins). In the same year, 1851, the value of one peso was determined to be equal to five francs per sild (or 22.5 grammes of pure silver).

The first paper currency in Chile was created in the province of Valdivia between the years 1840 and 1844 by the provincial treasury. These bills were written in four and eight reales respectively as their face value.

In the year 1881, the government of Mexico issued paper currency that could be traded in for silver or gold at a rate of 1:1.1, with the exchange rates increasing for amounts of $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, and $1,000 respectively. In the year 1891, banknotes for 50 centavos and 500 pesos were first circulated in Mexico. In the year 1898, the government issued temporary bills that were made up of private bank notes that had the words "Emisión Fiscal" overprinted on them. As a direct result of this, there would be no more private paper money issued. In 1925, the Banco Central de Chile began producing banknotes with the printing press. The initial series consisted of overprints of previously issued government notes, and they were distributed in denominations of 5, 10, 50, 100, and 1,000 pesos each. Between the years 1931 and 1933, the first paper bills with denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 5000, and 10,000 pesos were created. These bills were made of paper.

The printing of the 1 peso note and the 20 peso note was discontinued in 1943 and 1947, respectively. The printing of all subsequent denominations continued until the year 1959, and in 1958, the first 50,000 peso note was issued.

In 1976, the following denominations of currency were introduced: 5 pesos, 10 pesos, 50 pesos, and 100 pesos. The backs of the two lowest denominations of currency resembled the backs of the 5000 and 10,000 escudo notes that they had replaced. As inflation took hold, a new challenge presented itself in the form of increasingly higher denominations. The first bill for 500 pesos was printed in May of 1977, and subsequent bills for 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 2,000, and 20,000 pesos were introduced in June 1978, June 1981, December 1997, and December 1998, respectively.

Since September 2004, all banknotes, including those for the 2000 peso denomination, have been made out of polymer. In September 2009, circulation of the 5000 peso note began, while in May 2011, the polymer version of the 1000 peso note was introduced. This marked the first time in the history of the Chilean economy that a new series of banknotes was launched for a reason other than inflation.

The new banknote for the 1000 pesos was introduced on May 11, 2011, and it has become increasingly popular since then.
