History of the Georgian Lari

On April 5, 1993, the Georgian kuponi became the country's official currency, succeeding the Russian ruble in that role. Hyperinflation was common during this time period, and there were no coins or other denominations available for use with this money. Banknotes were issued in sizes ranging from one kuponi to one million kuponi, with the more uncommon sizes of three, three thousand, thirty thousand, and one hundred fifty thousand also being available.

On October 2, 1995, the kuponi was replaced by the Lari at an exchange rate of one million to one. This occurred while Eduard Shevardnadze was president of Georgia. Giorgi Kadagidze, the Governor of the National Bank of Georgia, made the announcement that the winning design for Georgia's currency would be announced on July 8, 2014.

The National Bank of Georgia released a whole new complete set of banknotes with values ranging from $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 between the months of November 2016 and October 2019.
