The value of the currency plummeted all the way through the length of the civil war, which lasted from 1975 until 1990. The recent political and economic unrest in the country has resulted in a considerable devaluation of the local currency, the pound, relative to its official peg of 1507.5 pounds to one US dollar. History of the Lebanese Pound
Since 1939, the Central Bank of Lebanon, also known as the Banque du Liban, has been in charge of issuing all banknotes. The denominations of the banknotes ranged from one pound to two hundred. They were issued. There are now banknotes in circulation for denominations including 1,000 pounds, 5,000 pounds, 10,000 pounds, 20,000 pounds, 50,000 pounds, and 100,000 pounds, amongst others. There are coins available in denominations of fifty pounds, one hundred pounds, and five hundred pounds.
The history of Lebanon's currency is long and eventful, beginning with the Ottoman lira and continuing on through the Egyptian pound, French franc, and Syrian pound before ultimately settling on the Lebanese pound in 1939.
The LBP is the current currency of Lebanon. Lebanon began producing coins in denominations of 2 and 5 piastres for circulation for the first time in 1924.
The first banknotes for the country were manufactured in 1925 by the Banque de Syrie et du Grand-Liban (also known as the Bank of Syria and Greater Lebanon). The smallest bill was twenty-five piastres, while the largest bill was one hundred lek. 1939 was the year when it became known as the Bank of Syria and Lebanon after undergoing a name change. This is the first year that the LL 250 bill was issued.
Even after the end of World War II, the Bank of Syria and Lebanon continued to produce banknotes for Lebanon. These banknotes, which were now known as "Lebanese pounds" (, livre libanaise), were differentiated from Syrian banknotes by using a different name.
In accordance with the Code of Money and Credit, the Banque du Liban (also known as the Bank of Lebanon) was formally established on April 1, 1964. The Bank of Lebanon was given the exclusive issuing rights for banknotes with Arabic fronts and French backs on August 1, 1963.
In order to compensate for the value of the currency being eroded by inflation during the 1980s and 1990s, new notes with a higher denomination were created and circulated.
