The rial is the official currency of the Republic of Yemen. The Yemeni riyal is technically divisible into 100 fils, despite the fact that coins with the fils denomination have not been struck since Yemen's unification. Since 2014, the value of the Yemeni rial has been gradually deteriorating as a consequence of the persistent political unrest that occurs in the country. As a direct consequence of the ongoing civil conflict in Yemen, the country's two official currencies now trade at separate values. The Yemeni rial symbol is ﷼.

Currency in southern Yemen, which is primarily controlled by separatists backed by the UAE and the old government backed by Saudi Arabia, has gone into freefall despite the fact that printing is still going on. This is because the old administration is backed by Saudi Arabia. The fact that banknotes printed after 2017 are not recognised as legitimate forms of payment in northern Yemen, a territory primarily controlled by Ansar Allah with support from Iran, has contributed to the currency market's ability to remain relatively steady. The relative sizes of banknotes printed before and after 2017 can be used to differentiate between the two.

The live Yemeni rial rate is INR (⚠️ ) . You can keep an eye on the real-time Yemeni rial price.

History of the Yemeni Rial

Yemen created its very own currency to use for transactions within the country. Following the union of North and South Yemen in 1990, both the rial and the dinar were used as the country's official currency, with 1 dinar being equivalent to 26 rials. On June 11, 1996, dinars were finally converted into their final amount of dollars. The first coins to circulate in the Republic of Yemen did so in the year 1993. The Yemeni rial's value in relation to the US dollar has dropped significantly in comparison to its all-time high of 12.01 rials per dollar, which it reached in the early 1990s.

Since the middle of the 1990s, the Yemeni rial has been completely convertible into other currencies. In comparison to the US dollar, the value of the rial has remained virtually unchanged over the course of the previous few years, despite falling from YRls 20 to somewhere about YRls 215. However, since 2010, the Central Bank of Yemen has been forced to intervene on many times in order to stop a precipitous decline in the country's holdings of foreign reserve currency.

At the time of Yemen's unification, the northern region had already begun minting coins denominated 1 rial, 5 fil, 10 fil, 25 fil, and 50 fil. There is no longer any currency denominated in fils that is in circulation. The Central Bank of Yemen minted brand new coins for the 1 rial and the 5 rial denominations in the year 1993. 1995 saw the introduction of a coin with a value of 10 rials, while 2004 saw the launch of a coin with a value of 20 rials. At the time of unification, the Central Bank of Yemen had notes in circulation with denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, and 100 rials. These notes were in circulation. In 1993, the 1 rial note and the 5 rial note were converted into coins; in 1995, the 10 rial note was removed from circulation and never replaced.

The 200 rial note was issued for the first time in 1996, followed by the 500 rial note in 1997, and then the 1,000 rial note in 1998. Coins were introduced in 2004, taking the place of the earlier 20-rial notes. On the same day, November 14, 2009, a banknote with a value of 250 rials was made available. In 2017, as a result of the ongoing civil war in Yemen, the Central Bank of the country was forced to relocate to the temporary capital of Aden. There, it issued brand new banknotes with updated safety features and new physical dimensions. These banknotes were issued in denominations of 500 and 1,000 rials. In 2018, the Central Bank of Yemen introduced a new banknote for 100 rials, and in the same year, it also brought back banknotes for 200 rials.

Best Ways to Identify Counterfeit Yemeni Rial Notes

counterfiet

There are a few ways through which you can spot the counterfeit Yemeni Rial notes:

  • green check

Notes are easily spotted as counterfeit if the denominations printed on them do not contain ink that changes colour when exposed to ultraviolet light. The hue of the banknote shifts subtly depending on whether it is tilted to the left or right.

  • green check

Each genuine banknote will contain a unique watermark, a security feature used to prevent counterfeiting. Fake banknotes are easy to recognise because of their smudged borders, typeface, or writing.

  • green check

Authentic banknotes feature microprinting that verifies their legitimacy. Microprinting is likely false if it is unreadable under a magnifying glass.

  • green check

Genuine banknotes can be identified by their raised printing, which is difficult to replicate by forgers. Move your fingertips slowly across the note's surface to feel for any raised printing.

  • green check

Security threads, or thin embedded strips that run vertically across the face of authentic banknotes, are a telltale sign that a bill is a real deal.
