History of the Sri Lankan Rupee
In 1825, the rixdollar Ceylon was replaced by the British Pound at a rate of 1 Pound = 13 13 Rixdollars, and British silver coins entered circulation.
Since Ceylon had previously been part of the Indian currency region, the Indian Rupee was adopted as the country's official coin on September 26, 1836. However, Treasury bonds denominated in British pounds continued to circulate alongside the Rupee. In 1844, the Bank of Ceylon began printing banknotes in Sri Lanka, and by 1856, these had completely replaced the previous Treasury notes.
After achieving autonomy in 1948, Ceylon established its Central Bank in 1950. After Ceylon's rebranding as Sri Lanka in 1972, the local currency also changed its name to reflect the new moniker. In the previous 100 years, several series of banknotes have been issued, the most recent being in 2011. The 11th series of Sri Lankan rupee notes, in six different denominations, was released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) on February 4, 2011.
Countries Accepting the Sri Lankan Rupee
The Sri Lanka Rupee is the legal tender and official currency of Sri Lanka and is used for everyday financial transactions.
Amount in the Sri Lankan Rupee You Should Carry for Your Trip
The cost of your trip to Sri Lanka will depend on a number of things, like how often you eat out, how nice your hotel is, and how often you take public transportation. If you want to go on vacation and still get everything you want, you'll need about LKR 2,500 per day. On a luxury vacation, it's not unusual to spend more than LKR 23,000 per day on things like private transportation, meals with Michelin stars, and stays at five-star hotels. If you and your partner want to take a trip, keep in mind that the total cost of the trip could be anywhere from LKR 5,000 to LKR 50,000, depending on what you do.
In Sri Lanka, a single hotel room can cost anywhere from LKR 1,300 to LKR 15,000 per person per day. Your daily transportation costs could be anywhere from LKR 215 to LKR 2,000 per day, depending on whether you walk, take the bus, or call a cab. This would depend a lot on how you get around.
Best Ways to Identify Counterfeit Sri Lankan Rupee Notes

There are a few ways through which you can spot the counterfeit Sri Lankan Rupee notes:
The watermark, which is depicted on the authentic note, is a different bird for each denomination. There's also a vertical watermark highlighting the monetary worth.
Each corner of an authentic banknote features a Cornerstone® watermark in the shape of a pair of diagonal bars.
When held up to the light, the front and back of the bill's numerical value align perfectly.
A close inspection of any authentic note reveals the letters "CBSL" and the numerical value.
To aid the visually handicapped, the denomination is printed in a vertical order of densely written dots (beginning with one dot for Rs 20 currency note) on the left side of the note. Feel the raised printing with your fingers as you run them across the authentic note (such as the title Central Bank, tactile bars, and primary graphics).
