The Swiss franc serves as the nation's primary currency and medium of trade, not only in Switzerland but also in Liechtenstein. The Swiss National Bank and the Swiss Mint are responsible for the production of banknotes and Swiss franc coins, respectively, in Switzerland. The Swiss franc symbol is SFr in addition to CHF and Fr. CHF is held by many governments and financial institutions as a protection against market and investment risk.

Banknotes denominated in Swiss francs are printed by the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and exist in the following denominations: 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 1,000. The Swiss franc is divisible into 100 smaller units named Rappen (Rp. ), centime (c. ), centesimo (ct. ), and rap (rp. ), each of which is the name for one-hundredth of a franc in German, French, Italian, and Romansh, respectively. 5 centimes, 10 centimes, 20 centimes, ½ franc, 1 franc, 2 franc and 5-franc coins are all minted by the Swiss federal mint, Swissmint.

History of the Swiss Franc

The franc was established in 1798 and used until 1803 alongside other foreign currencies; by 1803 there were over 8,000 distinct types of coins and banknotes in circulation. The Swiss federal government assumed responsibility for minting legal tender in 1848.

As of 1850, the Federal Coinage Act established the Swiss franc as the country's official currency, pegged to the French franc. In 1865, Switzerland and four other countries (France, Italy, Switzerland, and Belgium) formed the Latin Monetary Union, in which they formally committed to staying on the gold standard until the year 2000.

The Swiss National Bank unexpectedly lifted its peg on the Euro and allowed the currency to float in 2015, triggering a widespread sell-off that wiped away the wealth of some individuals and companies.

Countries Accepting the Swiss Franc

Switzerland has 26 territories and 4 official languages (German, Italian, French, and Romansh). The Swiss franc is a symbol of national solidarity. The Federal Constitution of Switzerland from 1848 states that the Federal Government is the exclusive issuer of the CHF currency.

Amount in the Swiss Franc You Should Carry for Your Trip

The overall price of your vacation to Switzerland will be determined by a wide variety of aspects, including how lavish your accommodation is, the number of times you dine in restaurants, and the amount of time you spend travelling by public transit. During your trip, you can have everything you desire for an average daily cost of approximately Sfr90. A luxury trip might easily cost more than Sfr600 per day if you choose to indulge in activities and amenities such as private transportation, meals prepared by Michelin-starred chefs, and accommodations in five-star hotels. It is possible that the entire cost of a vacation for you and your significant other might range anywhere from Sfr200 to Sfr1,300, depending on the activities that you and your partner decide to indulge in during your time away.

The price of a room at a Swiss hotel can range anywhere from Sfr60 to Sfr300 per person per night depending on the room's amenities. Your daily transportation costs could run anywhere from Sfr15 to Sfr70, depending on whether you opt to walk, ride the bus, or hail a taxi.
