The Ghana Cedi is the official currency and legal tender of the West African nation of Ghana. History of the Ghana Cedi

The Cedi was first introduced in the year 1965 following Ghana’s adoption of the decimal system, abandoning its predecessor the Ghanaian Pound based on the British Monetary System. The word “Cedi” comes from the native word for cowry shells, which were often used as currency by Arab traders in the older days of Ghana.
