The currency used in Costa Rica is the colon (plural: colones; Costa Rican Colón symbol: ₡; code: CRC). It was given the name Cristóbal Colón in honour of Christopher Columbus. There are one hundred céntimos in a Costa Rican Colón.

History of the Costa Rican Colón

A little more than 70 years after Costa Rica and its Central American neighbours proclaimed their independence from Spain, the Costa Rican Colón was accepted as the country's official currency. With a 1:1 exchange rate, the Costa Rican Colón took the place of the Costa Rican peso. Eight Spanish reales were equal to one peso in the former currency, a holdover from the colonial era.

The Costa Rican Colón and peso coexisted for a while after being introduced at par value. Initially, silver 50 centimos and gold coins with denominations ranging from two to twenty Costa Rican Colón were produced. At the time, one centimo was equivalent to one Costa Rican Colón and one peso. The national government's initials, "G.C.R," were inscribed on these coins. In the early half of the 20th century, a number of banks issued Costa Rican Colón, but since 1951, the Central Bank of Costa Rica has been the sole producer of them. From 2006 to 2015, the Costa Rican Colón Currency was crawlingly pegged to the US dollar; however, it has been floating since that time.

The Costa Rican Colón to euro is currently at 0.0016 euro. 1 Costa Rican Colón to USD is 0.0017 USD after it was changed to floating currency.

Countries Accepting the Costa Rican Colón

Costa Rican Colón is accepted only in Costa Rica. Similarly, US Dollars are accepted in the country. Costa Rican Colón to dollar is currently at 0.0017 USD.

Amount in the Costa Rican Colón You Should Carry for Your Trip

Although you won't be able to go on any lengthy excursions, you can take in as much unrestricted nature as you like.

Expect to spend closer to 65,000 Costa Rican Colón per day if you wish to stay in finer accommodations, partake in more drinks and dining out, and participate in some expensive activities like ziplining or surfing lessons.

A luxury stay will cost in the region of 140,000 Costa Rican Colón per day.

If you are a couple with 1 child, expect to pay 500,000 Costa Rican Colón for a comfortable stay with all the fun activities.

You should keep an eye on the live Costa Rican Colón rate for its currency exchange rates. Want to use credit cards on your trip? Then make sure to use Costa Rican Colón forex cards.
